Punch in the Stomach

{does anyone out there even read this??}
I have once again owned up to my lack of commitment in this blogging relationship but that is because I was punched in the stomach.
I was punched and it wrecked me for silly little daily thoughts of life because there is a much bigger issue at hand. We are on the edge of history. You know when you read stories of heroics and tales that seem from another world. Well we have existed inside our pleasant-ville of uniform shopping centers and cookie cutter neighborhoods for too long. I can't pretend that I am the only one in the world anymore. Knowledge is power? Well it can ruin you also and I am not gonna change the channel on this uncomfortable message.
I'm talking about slavery.
No I'm not a civil war re-enactor. In this present world there are more people enslaved than there have ever been before. 27,000,000. count the zeros and let that sink in. Those trafficked in these chains will rake in about $32 billion a year according to the International Labor Office. Crimes that thrive in the shadows.
yup... people are absorbing their pleasant harmonious ipod vibes, typing away on their personally owned computer technology, laughing at affectionate texts from lovers and friends and sucking down fancy caffinated drinks all around me while I have just uncovered the knowledge that human trafficking will undoubtedly climb to the number one spot of crime in the world in this next year. In fact it racked in more profit than Nike, Google, and Starbucks COMBINED just in 2007. Sick. sick. sick.
Yet... the world around me looks so... so perfect, fulfilling, content and pleasant. I don't want to believe it. But the more I look the more I see the reality. The more I realize this is not just happening in Thailand, Haiti and other far off lands with names I can't pronounce. No, there was a report of a trafficking ring busted not 15 miles from my apartment last week!
Humans, a hot commodity??
Have you ever looked at the faces on a side of a milk carton and wondered where they could have possibly gone?
If this doesn't break your heart. You don't have one.
{stay tuned}
